Tailgating is one of my favorite traditions — whether it’s for the big game, a concert, or just an excuse to hang out with friends. Sure, the score matters (at least a little bit), but for me it’s really about the food, the company, and those little in-between moments that turn into the best memories. Standing around the grill, laughing, passing snacks, and raising a glass? That’s the real win.

And while beer is usually the go-to, wine can be an excellent complement to the big game. It pairs beautifully with tailgate classics, feels a little more festive, and adds that extra touch of fun.

The tricky part? Tailgating can get overcomplicated fast. Too much prep, hauling half your kitchen, or stressing over a Pinterest-perfect spread can take away from the joy.

My motto: keep it simple. Easy, crowd-pleasing food + wine that pairs beautifully + just enough festive flair to set the vibe = tailgating made easy (and way more fun).

Keep the Menu Easy & Crowd-Pleasing

The best tailgates are the ones where you spend more time chatting than cooking. I like to stick with a couple of tried-and-true favorites that everyone loves and that don’t require juggling a dozen ingredients. Think:

  • Mini sliders – These are the MVPs of tailgate food. They’re bite-sized, easy to grab in one hand (leaving the other free for your drink ), and you can dress them up or down. Go classic with cheese and pickles, or get a little creative with BBQ pulled pork or buffalo chicken sliders. They’re fun, filling, and always the first thing to disappear.

  • A hearty dip – Spinach artichoke, buffalo chicken, queso… need I say more? Dips are the definition of crowd-pleasing because they’re shareable, comforting, and perfect with chips, pretzels, or veggies. Plus, they can be prepped ahead of time so you’re not stuck stirring at the tailgate.

  • Chili in a slow cooker – The ultimate tailgate hack. It feeds a crowd, warms everyone up, and stays hot all afternoon. You can make it as spicy or mild as you like, and don’t forget to set out toppings like shredded cheese, sour cream, and green onions so people can customize their bowl.

Then I mix in a few store-bought snacks — chips, popcorn, or even a simple cheese board — and I’m set.

The goal isn’t perfection, it’s ease. A little homemade + a little store-bought = the perfect balance for a stress-free, delicious tailgate.

Wine Made Simple: Tailgate Sips & Pairings

Beer might be the classic tailgate drink, but wine can be a total game-changer. It pairs beautifully with tailgate favorites, feels a little more festive, and — bonus — it’s easier to transport than you think. Here’s how to make wine work for game day, plus some simple pairings to wow your crowd:

  • Opt for versatile varietals – A crisp Sauvignon Blanc is amazing with dips, seafood, and veggies, while a fruity Pinot Noir shines with sliders, chili, and cheese boards. Fun fact: about 78% of wine served in casual settings is white — no surprise, since it’s perfect for warm afternoons.

  • Keep it chill – Pack a cooler with ice so your wine is crisp and refreshing all afternoon.

Easy pairings to try:

  • Mini sliders → Cabernet Sauvignon (classic beef) or Pinot Noir (BBQ + pulled pork)

  • Spinach artichoke dip → Sauvignon Blanc or bubbly Prosecco

  • Buffalo chicken dip → Chardonnay or a slightly sweet Riesling

  • Chili in a slow cooker → Zinfandel or Malbec for smoky, hearty flavors

  • Cheese board → Pinot Noir (red) or Chenin Blanc (white) — versatile, easy, and food-friendly

Discover My Momma's Chili Recipe!

My mom used to make a delicious chili, and my husband and I have gradually adapted it to suit our spice preferences. It's always a hit with everyone!

Ingredients:

  • 3 lbs. ground beef

  • 1 bundle celery, chopped

  • 2 onions (white or yellow), diced

  • 2 green bell peppers, chopped

  • 1 ½ large cans crushed tomatoes

  • 1 ½ large cans tomato sauce

  • 2 (48 oz) cans tomato juice (Sacramento or Campbell’s)

  • 2 cans dark kidney beans, drained and rinsed

  • 2 cans light kidney beans, drained and rinsed

  • 1 large can tomato paste

  • Seasonings: salt, pepper, chili powder, cayenne, smoked paprika (to taste)

Instructions:

  1. In a large pot, sauté the ground beef until browned.

  2. Add the onions, green peppers, and celery. Cook until softened and fragrant.

  3. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato juice, tomato paste, and beans.

  4. Season generously with salt, pepper, chili powder, cayenne, and smoked paprika. Adjust to your taste.

  5. Bring to a gentle simmer and let cook for 3–4 hours, stirring occasionally. The long simmer lets the flavors meld beautifully.

  6. Serve hot, topped with chopped red onion and a generous sprinkle of cheddar cheese for that perfect finishing touch.

Keep the Energy Up with Fun and Flair

While food and wine are essential, incorporating a few simple activities can keep the energy lively throughout your tailgate! Games like cornhole are classic and accessible for everyone—whether you're tossing beanbags with friends or showing newcomers how it's done. Trivia games highlight everyone's competitive spirit: come prepared with quirky or challenging questions about the sport, the teams, or even fun pop culture references, and offer small prizes to winners for added excitement. Nothing sets the atmosphere quite like music—create an upbeat playlist, bring a portable speaker, and watch as everyone starts tapping their feet, singing along, or dancing between bites.

You don't require a truck bed full of decorations to create a festive atmosphere at your tailgate. A vibrant tablecloth, some napkins in your team's colors, and reusable wine tumblers can immediately make your setup lively and welcoming. A compact folding table maintains a casual yet cozy vibe, and with minimal effort, your tailgate becomes a memorable mini celebration.

Tailgating Tips for a Stress-Free Experience

To make your tailgating as enjoyable as possible, keep these extra tips in mind:

  • Plan Ahead: Create a checklist of items you need to pack, such as food, drinks, games, and seating. This will help reduce last-minute chaos.

  • Stay Organized: Use bins or coolers to store your items, and label everything. This makes it easy to grab what you need without a fuss.

  • Mind Your Clean-Up: Bring trash bags to keep your area tidy. It's great to leave the space better than you found it and shows respect for your venue.
