While the leaves change in other regions, we Floridians have our unique way of celebrating fall. Instead of chilly winds and vibrant foliage, we enjoy warm sunshine and palm trees. Although it might not resemble a typical autumn, we can still craft our own unforgettable experiences. Embracing the season in Florida is not only feasible; it's an exciting adventure ready to unfold.
After a summer filled with travel and activities, it's a delight to slow down. The second Labor Day arrives, I officially welcome fall in my home, and with it comes my favorite time of year—soup season!
Embracing Fall in Florida
In Pinellas County and its surroundings, there are many ways to enjoy fall without leaving your neighborhood.

Gallagher’s Pumpkins & Produce in St. Pete is a must-visit. It bursts with pumpkins of every size, seasonal delights, and a festive atmosphere that can make anyone feel like they've stepped into an autumn wonderland. One of the cherished traditions at Gallagher’s is the opportunity for families to take photos with the beautifully decorated truck. This vibrant truck, adorned with colorful pumpkins and autumn decorations, serves as the perfect backdrop for capturing memories. Families gather around, smiling and laughing, as they create lasting keepsakes that celebrate the season.
DK Farms & Gardens in Largo is another fantastic location. They offer fall festivals and hayrides, making it an ideal destination for seasonal activities. One of the highlights is picking the perfect pumpkin, which can be a fun and memorable experience for visitors of all ages.
Even if temperatures remain warm, visiting these spots can instantly lift your spirit into the season. If you live outside the area, seek out your own local pumpkin patch or farm. This could be your neighborhood's hidden treasure that offers a slice of fall enjoyment.
The Star of the Table: Harvest Squash Soup
No celebration of fall is complete without the season's flavors. My favorite? A rich pot of butternut squash soup.

Imagine tender butternut squash roasted until sweet, blended until it's silky-smooth, with hints of cream, nutmeg. Just the aroma can transport you to a cozy fall evening, even if you're in shorts and sandals.
Recipe for Butternut Squash Soup
Here’s an easy recipe to get you started on your fall culinary journey:
Ingredients:
1 large butternut squash, peeled and cubed
1 onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
4 cups vegetable broth
1 cup heavy cream (or coconut milk for a dairy-free alternative)
1 teaspoon nutmeg
Salt and pepper to taste
Olive oil for roasting
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
Toss the squash with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Spread it on a baking sheet and roast for 25-30 minutes until golden and tender.
In a large pot, sauté onions and garlic until translucent.
Add roasted squash and vegetable broth to the pot. Simmer for about 10 minutes.
Use an immersion blender (or transfer to a blender) to puree the soup until smooth.
Stir in the cream and nutmeg, adjusting the flavor to your liking.
Serve warm, garnished with fresh herbs or a drizzle of olive oil. Alternatively, you can top with maple syrup for a sweet twist or sprinkle with parmesan for a savory flavor.
This soup isn't just a meal; it’s a warm hug in a bowl, ideal for those chilly evenings when all you want is comfort food.
The Perfect Pour
No autumn gathering feels complete without the perfect drink. Whether it’s a spiced cider or a glass of red wine, the right beverage can elevate your seasonal enjoyment.

For a simple spiced apple cider, heat apple cider with a few cinnamon sticks, cloves, and a slice of orange. Let it simmer for about 20 minutes to create a fragrant drink that fills your home with the essence of fall.
As an alternative, try a glass of 2023 Gallivant Chardonnay from Scout & Cellar. This wine offers a rich and rounded flavor profile with hints of toastiness, complemented by delicate fruit and spice notes, making it an ideal choice for relaxing evenings at home.
Crafting Your Own Fall Experience
While Florida may not deliver the typical fall experience of cold weather and colorful leaves, it certainly allows us to create our version of the season. From visiting local farms to preparing cozy soups and enjoying warm drinks, there are countless ways to celebrate fall right at home.
Take the time this fall to savor what truly matters—the experiences we create and the cherished memories we make. So grab your pumpkins, fire up your soup pot, and let’s create a memorable fall together—Florida style!
